With the plethora of sweet treats to be enjoyed around this time of year, it can be quite difficult to stick to healthier options. But with just a few tricks, you can enjoy holiday treats without putting processed junk in your body.

This vanilla cake with peanut butter icing is a perfect example of this. Using whole wheat flour in the cake and a sugar that is simple and unprocessed for your icing helps you enjoy this dessert even more. In addition, the entire recipe only involves ten main ingredients, most of which you have on hand. It’s rich, a little (but not too) sweet, and overall, a perfect addition to your dessert spread.

Ingredients

For the cake –

1.5 cups of whole wheat flour

1 tbsp. cinnamon

1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg

1/4 tsp. ground cloves

1 tbsp. baking powder

2 large very ripe bananas

1/2 cup maple syrup

2 flax eggs (2 tbsp. flax meal + 5 tbsp. water, mix together and let sit for 10 minutes)

1 cup almond milk

For the icing –Β 

1 can coconut cream

1 cup peanut butter

1/2 cup powdered sugar

1 tsp. vanilla extract
